I get asked this question a lot! As a beekeeper in Canada, it's one the biggest challenges we face, making sure your bees survive the winter. Honey bees, hibernate in their hives, huddled together, vibrating together to stay warm. They move around the hive in a group eating their honey stores until the first nectar flow.

They keep the internal temperature of the hive above 13 degrees. When you have a warm winter day, they fly out to relieve themselves. One of our main jobs before winter is to make sure each hive has enough food to survive our long winters. If we find they are too light, we feed them using a sugar mixture similar to humming birds. We also check on them first thing in the spring and do another feeding until they find enough food for themselves.
